No.Fest was conceived in April, 2008 when Sean Ongley talked to Chad Ferguson about booking a bunch of bands in the neighborhood venue, Proper Eats. Chad introduced Sean to Jeffrey Helwig, who owned a gelato shop called Legong, which he had intended to be a cozy music venue. The trio decided to collaborate on a whole day of music. Then James at Proper Eats told Chad, who in turn notified Sean and Jeffrey, that the town square down the block was a community space, and they need only to reserve it for an event. Thus, it was decided to make 3 stages of it, to be held on Summer Solstice, that year.

In those three months, the trio scrambled together a unique program, for all manner of performer. Sean brought KBOO on as co-sponsor, who offered a live broadcast from the square. The program spilled in to a fourth venue, St. Johns Booksellers for literature based work; the noise artists contained in Legong, the jazz and rock distributed between the square and Proper Eats: twenty-five performances in four venues. The event became known as No.Fest: Nu.Music.Arts. On June 21st, 2008, the annual was born.

In November 2008, No.Fest began the brainstorm toward 2009. By January KBOO lifted No.Fest to a new level with the elevator of fiscal sponsorship. This is a leap toward the recognition of No.Fest as a non-profit community organization. Chad stepped back from organizing, leaving Sean and Jeffrey to lead an ad hoc army of volunteers and pro-bono helpers. Now, we move toward June 27th, for our 2nd annual No.Fest: Nu.Music.Arts.
